One evening in June, 2004, Bezos sent an email to his senior team (S-Team), the subject line read: “No more powerpoint presentations from now on at S-Team.”
Fourteen years later, the ban is still going strong. “We don’t do PowerPoint (or any other slide-oriented) presentations at Amazon,” Bezos wrote in his letter to shareholders this year.
“Powerpoint-style presentations somehow give permission to gloss over ideas, flatten out any sense of relative importance, and ignore the interconnectedness of ideas,” he added.
The simple truth is that slide decks are boring. Our brains are conditioned to react to human faces, not text on a screen. When you watch someone’s facial expressions, your brain’s mirror neurons fire similarly to how they would react if you were in the same situation, triggering a physical and emotional response. Plus, 65 percent of people are visual learners. We process visual information faster than text, as well as retain it better.
